Tight Tilt Goes to Cardinals, 2-1

The rain could not keep the home crowd from enjoying a good ballgame.
Mario Soto, despite pitching well, was dismayed with the outcome: a hard-fought, 2-1 Cincinnati Reds defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Max Lanier went 5.2 innings, allowing no runs on 7 hits. The left-hander struck out 2 and walked 2. With the win, he ups his record to 1-0 this season. Todd Worrell collected his 1st save.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Cardinals had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when center fielder Ray Lankford hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Mario Soto and made the score 2-0, Cardinals. Lankford was 2 for 4 with 2 singles.
In postgame remarks, Lankford applauded his team's "toughness."
At 6-2, the Cardinals have played well so far.
