Giants Scuttle Padres, 5-2
|
San Francisco and San Diego put this game in the books despite some rain.
San Francisco starter Joe McGinnity pitched effectively against the San Diego Padres at AT&T Park. The right-hander led his team to a win, 5-2. Rod Beck recorded the save, his 19th.
The Padres had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Giants going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 31-year old second baseman Robby Thompson came to the plate. Thompson hit a 3-run home run on a 2-1 splitter from San Diego hurler Andy Benes. It was Thompson's 6th home run of the year.
"Joe did a good job of shutting their lineup down," said San Francisco manager .
The win boosts the Giants to 45-33. The loss puts the Padres at 44-34.
