The New York Mets beat the Oakland Athletics, 10-3. New York pitcher and Tampa, Florida, native Dwight Gooden led the way. At 44-33, the Mets are currently second in the National League Eastern Division.

The Mets liked what they saw from Gooden. The 20-year- old pitcher had a commanding presence on the mound, limiting the Athletics to no runs on 4 hits over 7.1 innings, and striking out 8.
