Red Sox Wiggle Past Seattle, 2-1
|
The Boston Red Sox earned a close win over the Seattle Mariners, thanks in part to Smoky Joe Wood. The Boston right-hander played a key role in the 15-inning, 2-1 victory. Luis Tiant claimed the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 3.1 innings. His record stands at 1-0. Tom Burgmeier got credit for the save for Boston. It was his 1st of the year.
Boston needed the clutch hitting of Ted Williams to notch the win. The designated hitter hammered a solo home run in the top of the 15th inning to put the Red Sox on top, 2-1. For the game, Williams had 1 home run and 1 single in 6 at-bats.
Williams attributed the win to "making big pitches in big moments."
The triumph puts Boston at 41-37 for the season.
