New York got a strong outing from David Cone as the Mets defeated the San Diego Padres, 3-1, at Citi Field. Cone picked up the win for New York, going 8 innings. He gave up 1 run on 7 hits. He now sports a record of 8-3. Skip Lockwood picked up the save, his 17th.
Jeff Kent took San Diego hurler Randy Jones deep in the bottom of the sixth. His solo home run put the Mets on top, 2-1. In all, Kent had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4.
"I'm just trying to make sure I'm focused for each and every pitch," said Cone.
