It was all about winning for the New York Yankees -- and win they did.
There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball.
"We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said center fielder Joe DiMaggio, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions."
New York defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6-4 at Yankee Stadium to take the series 4-2.
"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said New York manager . "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."
The 1930's were the Yankees decade with 10 world series appearances and three victories. They were led with a lineup of Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, Charlie Keller, George Selkirk and Lou Gehrig. From the hill they have Lefty Gomez, Johnny Allen and Al Hollingsworth. The Phillies club included several of the Homested Grays from the NeL, Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, George Scales, Ray Brown, andWebster McDonald.
During the Yankees run in the 1930s they lost three times to their cross town rivals the Giants and twice to the Chicago Cubs.
