THE ERAS

Since the beginning of major league baseball there have been six eras. Starting with the Pioneer Era, 1880-1892 moving on to the Deadball Era, 1893-1919. The next era is the Landis Era, or Lively Ball Era, 1920-1946. After WWII there was the Baby Boomer Era or Integreation Era, 1947-1968. With the introduction of artifical grass we have the Artifical Turf Era, 1969-1992. Followed by the Camden Yards Era 1993 to today. Click on the Era logo to navigate to the Era page.

Pioneer Era 1880-1892

The first era in baseball was the pioneer era. Although the game started in 1871, we will start in 1880 due it being the first season in Dave Koch's Action PC Baseball game.

Deadball Era 1893-1919

The Deadball era is the second era in baseball, named so because the ball actually was softer, or dead. The game was played from base to base, stealing and hitting and running were very prevalent.

Landis Era 1920-1946

The Landis era was named after judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis who was the first Commissioner of Baseball from 1920 until his death. The era was also known as the lively ball era due to a new livelier baseball.

Baby Boomer Era 1947-1968

The Integration era or Baby Boomer era was post WWII and the beginning of integration in baseball with the signing of Jackie Robinson by the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Artifical Turf Era 1969-1992

The Artificle Turf era marked the use of turf in domed stadiums. The Astrodome in Houston was the first artifical turf ball field in 1966. The era is also known as the expansion era as the MLB moves into more cities.

Camden Yards Era 1993-present

The last era, the Camden Yards era named for the first of it's kind of retro ballpark in Baltimore home of the Orioles. The era could also be named as the modern era since it covers recent baseball seasons.
